The AI PERMA Model Coach skill for Claude
This free skill has Claude break your wellbeing down along the five dimensions of Martin Seligman: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishment. Two fixed questions per dimension, reflecting back what it hears, a summary of your strongest and weakest dimensions, and then three achievable actions for the dimensions lagging behind. No score, no diagnosis, no advice about medication. A conversation with a fixed order, and that is exactly the gain.

One open question in, an action plan out
reg. P.001There are four steps: intake, analysis per dimension, synthesis and action plan. The questions in this mock-up sit literally in the SKILL.md. The user's answers do not sit in it and are therefore a schematic example: the file contains no worked case, only the questions and the actions.
What the AI PERMA Model Coach is
The AI PERMA Model Coach is one of the 100 free skills in TheSEO's skill library NL. A skill is an instruction file, SKILL.md, that gives an AI assistant a fixed way of working for one task. Not software, no subscription, no link to anything else: a single text file of 653 words that tells Claude which questions to ask, in what order, what to do with them and where to stop. Want to know first what such a file actually is, read what Claude skills are NL.
You will probably recognise the problem this skill solves. You do not feel great in your work or your week, you put that to an AI, and you get a friendly mush back: take good care of yourself, plan breaks, talk to someone about it. It is all true and none of it helps you, because there is no structure underneath it. This skill puts that structure underneath. It cuts wellbeing into five pieces that each get looked at separately, and only once all five have been covered does the conclusion come.
That split is not arbitrary. It comes from Flourish by Martin Seligman from 2011, in which wellbeing is not seen as a single score but as five independent dimensions that each carry value on their own. Someone can score strongly on meaning and weakly on relationships, or the other way round, and those two say something very different about what should change. An average hides exactly the difference that is worth acting on.
What the skill is meant for: personal reflection, coaching conversations, appraisal conversations and a conversation about how a team is doing. What it is not meant for is stated just as clearly: never diagnose, no medical advice, and refer to a professional at signs of serious complaints. That last point is the most important sentence in the whole file and we return to it in DOC.06.
Why a conversation without a framework stalls
Ask someone how things are going and you almost always get the same answer: busy, but fine. That is not information. The reason a wellbeing conversation so often delivers nothing is not that people do not want to talk, but that there is no structure in which an answer finds a home. PERMA supplies that structure, and the file uses it to prevent four common mistakes.
Free association without a fixed framework. Without the skill a conversation jumps from your sleep pattern to your manager to your Sunday evening feeling, and at the end you still do not know what is actually the problem. With the skill Claude works through the five dimensions systematically, including the dimensions you did not bring up yourself. That is often exactly where the surprise sits.
Superficial answers with no follow-up. A vague question gets a vague answer. That is why concrete questions are prescribed, with it stated explicitly: no vague open questions. When did you last do something purely because it felt good is a different question from how are you doing, and produces a different conversation.
Advice before the picture is right. First it summarises what it hears, names your strongest dimensions and your points of attention, and then asks whether that picture matches how you see it. Only once you confirm does it move on to the plan. That saves an action plan for a problem you do not have.
Generic advice for all five at once. The plan covers the weakest one to two dimensions, not all five. Three actions for one dimension is manageable. Fifteen actions across five dimensions is a list you dismiss after three days. In diff form, with questions from the file: what goes out and what comes back in its place.
Five dimensions, ten fixed questions
reg. P.002This is the heart of the file: a description per dimension and exactly two questions, taken literally from the SKILL.md. The bars on the right are not part of the file. They show schematically what a profile can look like, because that is what the model is about: not an average, but the difference between the dimensions.
What actually sits in the SKILL.md
A skill is only as good as its instructions, so we simply describe them here, including what is not in there. The file opens with a frontmatter: name ai-perma-model-coach, version 1.0.0, TheSEO as author, and a description that states what the skill does. It analyses wellbeing across five dimensions based on Seligman's Flourish from 2011 and gives targeted questions and concrete actions per dimension. One honest note straight away: this file contains no licence line, unlike many other skills in the library. We give it away for free and you may adapt it freely.
Next comes the approach in four steps. Step 1 is the intake and it always starts with an open question: what brings you here today, or what would you like more insight into. Step 2 is the analysis, in which every dimension comes up systematically following a fixed pattern of four actions: ask two targeted questions, listen actively to the answers, reflect back what it hears, and only then move on to the next dimension.
Step 3 is the synthesis: a summary of your strongest dimensions and your points of attention, the question of whether that matches how you see it, and drawing up an action plan together for the weakest one to two dimensions. Step 4 is that plan itself, with three concrete and achievable actions per weak dimension for the coming two to four weeks.
The most valuable part of the file is a block of ten questions, two per dimension, which you find literally in FIG.02. That is also exactly why a skill of 653 words is more useful than a long prompt: the questions are fixed, so you get the same conversation every session, even if you phrase the request yourself in a sloppy way.
On top of that, there are fifteen example actions, three per dimension, that make the plan concrete. For positive emotions this includes writing down three things you are grateful for every day and taking conscious breaks without a screen. For engagement, ninety minute blocks for deep work and removing distractions. For relationships, checking in consciously each week with someone close to you. For meaning, writing down your core values and checking whether your current work matches them. For accomplishment, a goal that is challenging yet achievable and keeping track of your progress.
The tone is also fixed, in six lines: empathetic and non-judgemental, concrete questions rather than vague open questions, using summaries and reflections to verify, naming the scientific basis when it helps, never diagnosing or giving medical advice, and referring to a professional at signs of serious complaints. The last two are not style advice but hard limits, and they sit in FIG.04.
Finally, four ready made prompts. The basic analysis walks you through all five dimensions. The deep dive analysis takes one dimension and asks five progressively deeper questions. The action plan prompt starts from scores you fill in yourself and delivers a four week plan. And the team prompt applies the model to a team instead of to yourself. If you want to learn to set up a file like this yourself, the structure is explained in writing a SKILL.md NL.
And then what is not in there, because that belongs here too. There is no measurement instrument in it, no questionnaire with points and no norming. There is also no worked case in it, unlike the longer skills in the library. This is a short and tight file: the questions and the order are the whole skill. That is an honest limitation and at the same time the reason it is so easy to use in a team.
Three actions, per weak dimension
reg. P.003The fifteen example actions from the file, grouped by dimension. They are meant as a stock, not as an assignment: the plan takes the weakest one to two dimensions and pulls three achievable actions from it for the coming two to four weeks. The rest is left alone.
The theory the skill rests on
Three sources are named explicitly, and that is deliberate: then you can read them yourself and decide for yourself whether you agree with them. They are listed below with the reason they made it into the skill.
Flourish, Martin Seligman, 2011. This is the book in which PERMA is first set out this way. The core is a break with his own earlier work: wellbeing is not one thing you can add up to a single figure, but five parts that each carry value on their own. That is why the skill looks per dimension and does not deliver an overall score. Anyone who only looks at the average misses exactly the dimension where there is something to gain.
Authentic Happiness, Martin Seligman, 2002. The earlier book, from the beginning of positive psychology. It sits in the source list because without that starting point you do not see why Flourish was a correction. You do not need to read it to use the skill, but it explains why the emphasis in the model lies on independent dimensions.
The Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania. Seligman's own institute, named in the file as a source for background and research. Useful if you want to read further than the two books.
One thing should be said here, because it does not sit in the skill and it is too important to leave out. The model is widely used in research and practice, but that does not turn a conversation with an AI into a measurement. What you get is an ordered conversation along five dimensions with a plan at the end. That is worth exactly as much as the honesty of your own answers, and no more. Looking for a model that puts the needs underneath in order, look at the Maslow Pyramid Coach skill. Is it mainly about direction rather than wellbeing, then the Ikigai Coach skill is the better way in.
Where the skill stops
reg. P.004Unlike the longer skills in the library, this file has no separate list of things the skill never does. What it does have are two hard limits and four working rules, all in the block on tone and style. Below they are set out as request and response, with a note on whether it is a hard limit or a working rule.
Installing in Claude Code, Claude.ai or Codex
The zip contains one folder, ai-perma-model-coach, with the SKILL.md inside. Installing is simply a matter of putting the file in the right place, and that place differs per environment. SKILL.md has been an open standard since December 2025, so the same skill also works in Codex, Cursor and Gemini CLI. So you are not downloading a Claude file but a working instruction any modern AI assistant can read.
- Unpack the zip into
~/.claude/skills/(or.claude/skills/in your project). - Claude then recognises the skill on its own as soon as you bring up wellbeing, energy or PERMA.
- You can also call it directly, with
/ai-perma-model-coach.
- Go to Customize and then Skills.
- Upload the zip there as a skill.
- Or paste the contents of SKILL.md into the project instructions of a Project.
- Open
AGENTS.mdin your repo. - Paste the contents of SKILL.md into it, or put SKILL.md next to it as a separate file and refer to it from
AGENTS.md. - Codex reads that along at every session.
After that you pick one of the four prompts from the file and simply get started. Save the session in a project, because the skill comes into its own if you repeat it every quarter and can lay the dimensions side by side. If you get stuck on the installation, the step by step explanation sits in installing Claude skills NL. More background on working with AI you will find in the knowledge base.
When you do and do not use it
It is at its strongest when you have an unsettled feeling and do not know where to start. There the strength is precisely that five dimensions come up, including the dimensions you did not think of yourself. It also works well as a recurring measure of your own picture: repeat it every quarter and you see which dimension has shifted. And it works in a conversation with someone else, for instance in an appraisal conversation, because the model supplies the questions you do not so easily ask yourself.
For a team the file uses a separate prompt. You then work through the same five dimensions for the group. Do that with one warning that is not in the skill but is still true: you are then talking about people who did not give an answer themselves. Use the outcome as a starting point for the conversation with them, not as a conclusion about them. For the conversation afterwards the Radical Candor Coach skill NL is a logical addition.
There is one situation in which you should not use it, and it is more important than all the others. If you have complaints that persist, if you sleep badly, if you feel down or if you do not see a way through any more, this is not a coaching question. The file says so itself too: never diagnose, no medical advice, and refer to a professional at signs of serious complaints. That conversation belongs with your GP or your occupational health doctor. An AI that talks along pleasantly is not helpful there but delaying.
And the most honest limit: the skill makes what is going on visible, it does not solve it. If your engagement is low because your work does not suit you, ninety minutes of deep work will not fix that. What the model does do is move the question from how are you doing to which dimension is stuck, and that is a question you can act on. If the problem goes beyond wellbeing and heads towards your work, the GROW Coach skill is a better next step.
Run it yourself or have it run
reg. P.005This skill is the free do it yourself version of work we also deliver as a service. It stays complete, and without any catches, but be clear about what a skill is: it teaches your AI how to do something, while every new session starts empty. It is not the engine and not the memory. You prompt, you supply the context again every time, you check. Anyone who wants that differently has two next steps: hand over the engine, or sort out the memory.
where you are now The skill: you are the engine You run the AI PERMA Model Coach yourself in Claude, Codex or Cursor. Costs nothing, works today, and you keep it entirely in your own hands: no trial period, no locked off parts. The limit is your own time: it only happens when you prompt, and after the session your AI has forgotten the conversation again.
prepared for you The AI employee: it stands ready without you prompting This kind of work, but as a service: an AI employee prepares recurring work without you having to sit behind Claude for it. Control stays with you, because output remains a draft until a human gives approval. We deliver this through Mansotti, the company TheSEO is the trading name of, which builds the Quotes Employee, the Sales Employee and the Reporting Employee. Read what an AI employee is and does.
everything from one source Jarvis: all your AIs work from the same company knowledge The skill teaches the AI, the brain is where the memory lives. Want all your AIs to work from the same knowledge: that is Jarvis, the organisation brain. It connects ChatGPT, Claude, Codex and your people to the same projects, core knowledge and decisions, so your next AI session does not start again from scratch. Jarvis selects context, delegates work and stores only what has been approved: knowledge per client stays isolated and every step leaves a checkable trail. This skill also benefits from that, because a previous round through the five dimensions is only useful once you can lay it alongside one a quarter later. What that delivers in practice, from the plans to your first week, you can read at Jarvis itself.
What Jarvis delivers in practice
reg. P.006Step 3 deserves more than a paragraph, because this is the difference between a smart chat and a system you can build on. Jarvis is the organisation brain: it remembers what your AIs need to know, divides up the work and keeps track of what happened. With this model you notice that straight away, because a profile across five dimensions only says something once you can lay it alongside the previous round.
We have been running on this system ourselves for months, and that is the only reason we dare mention it here. Every agent session, every task and every decision gets logged in it and can be read back. So a new session does not start blank: it first retrieves the recorded decisions, the running projects and the latest changes, and carries on from where the previous one stopped. So we are not describing a promise here but the way of working we ourselves work in every day.
See the four plans at jarvis/pricing NL. Through the waiting list NL you only pass on your preferred plan with no obligation. That does not yet create an account, an order or a payment obligation. Business arrangements we discuss first.
The skills around it
reg. P.007Wellbeing never stands apart from direction, behaviour and the people around you. These skills from the same library each take on a different part of that chain.

What does the AI PERMA Model Coach skill cost?
Nothing. You download a 2.4 KB zip containing a folder and a single file, SKILL.md, and that is the complete skill. No account, no email address, no paid version. One honest note: unlike many other skills in our library, this file contains no licence line. The frontmatter names a name, a version and TheSEO as author. We give it away for free and you may adapt it freely to your own situation.
Does this skill also work in Codex, Cursor or Gemini CLI?
Yes. SKILL.md has been an open standard since December 2025, so the same file also works in Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI and other tools that follow the standard. In Codex you unpack the zip into .agents/skills/ in your project, or into ~/.agents/skills/ for all your projects; Codex has supported SKILL.md directly since the open standard of December 2025. Putting the contents of SKILL.md into your AGENTS.md still works too. The instructions themselves are simply readable text, so any AI assistant that reads instruction files can work with it.
Which questions does the skill ask exactly?
Ten, two per dimension, and they sit literally in the file. For positive emotions it asks about when you last did something purely because it felt good, and which moments gave you energy over the past week. For engagement, about the moments when you lose track of time and the situations where you feel most in your element. For relationships, meaning and accomplishment there are two each, again. Per dimension the coach listens, reflects back what it hears and only then moves on.
Does the skill give a score per dimension?
No, and that is the difference with the questionnaires you find online. There is no measurement instrument in the file. What is in it is a conversation: two questions per dimension, then a summary of your strongest dimensions and your points of attention, and the question of whether that matches how you see it. Only the separate action plan prompt starts from scores, and those you fill in yourself.
What comes out of a session?
An action plan for your weakest one to two dimensions, with three concrete and achievable actions per dimension for the coming two to four weeks. The file gives examples per dimension, such as ninety minute blocks for deep work for engagement, or writing down your core values and checking whether your current work matches them for meaning.
Does this skill replace a psychologist or coach?
No. The file is short and clear about that: never diagnose, never give medical advice, and refer to a professional at signs of serious complaints. The skill is meant for reflection, coaching and conversations about work. If you recognise complaints that persist, this conversation belongs with your GP or occupational health doctor and not with a chat.
Can you apply the model to a team too?
Yes, there is a separate prompt for that in the file: help me apply the PERMA model to my team. You then work through the same five dimensions for the group instead of for yourself. Do keep in mind that you are then talking about people who did not give an answer themselves, so check your picture with them before you base policy on it.
From a better conversation to less work
If engagement comes out as your weakest dimension, the follow-up question is where your attention is leaking away. In work, that is often fragmentation: too many loose tasks that no one has cleared away. No model helps against that, automation does. If you want to know which recurring work in your business can be taken off your hands, look at AI and automation or have your team learn to work with it themselves through the AI training NL. And if you simply want to keep talking about what AI can do for you, we do that in a conversation.
