Link building yourself, at your own pace.
Link building for website owners is well within reach yourself, as long as you know the order and are honest about your own time. This guide sets out the complete DIY route: from checking your basics to earning mentions, assessing reciprocal references without assuming any topology is a policy exemption, and keeping track of what happens to every link. Each step comes with a time estimate that you choose and adjust yourself, not a promise from us.

Seven steps, one order
reg. E.001Sending messages before assessing the destination can leave important preparation undone. The route below turns that around. First you check whether your site is worth linking to, then you choose where the links should go, and only after that do you reach out. The times per step are a starting point to adjust to your own schedule, not a norm and not a promise. What a backlink actually is, and how earned references differ from manipulative placements, is explained beforehand in what is link building NL.
Seven ways, three families
reg. E.002This guide groups seven possible methods into earning, asking and exchanging. Costs, speed and durability depend on the actual work and source; no comparative result is established here. Modest volume or relevance does not exempt an exchange created primarily to manipulate rankings. Select at most two suitable methods after checking resources, fees, reader value and editorial independence.
Choose your hours budget, not your dream budget
reg. E.003An oversized plan can exceed the time available; no dataset here establishes the main cause of DIY failure. So first choose how much time you genuinely have for it, and fit your methods to that. The three cards below describe possible scopes to test against that hours budget, including preparation and follow-up: activities, in other words, not rankings and not numbers of links, because nobody can honestly promise you those.
- Divide the default steps into tasks that fit each week
- A handful of personal messages per month
- Reviewing exchange requests and updating your log
- Do not assume a new article fits; scope existing drafts separately
- Choose suitable base-rhythm work within the same total
- One guest article per month only if all preparation and writing fit
- Making your link target page a little stronger every month
- Growing your source list with what you come across along the way
- Select from earlier options; do not automatically add all of them
- Scope a guide, tool or research task realistically; split or defer it if needed
- Adding a second link target once the first is running
- Maintaining relationships with the sites already linking to you
A log makes the work visible
reg. E.004Over three months, a log can help distinguish planned work, actual requests and verified placements. So keep track, per link, of what you asked for, what was placed and whether the link still exists. That can be a simple spreadsheet, or it can be automatic: anyone who exchanges through LinkLoop gets the monitoring included.
What makes a good link, and what you leave on the table
For every link you are considering, whether you earn it, ask for it or exchange it, the same four checkpoints apply. Does the site fit your audience? Does the actual context help readers, whether an article or a genuinely useful resource or industry listing? What evidence supports readership and genuine content? Would the mention or navigation still help without expected ranking credit? An unlinked name need not have the same referral value as a link. Supported failures mean do not proceed; unknowns mean research first, not an invented approval.
What you leave on the table matters just as much
Purchased ranking-credit packages and empty pages made to manipulate rankings are policy risks: Google regards paid links that influence ranking as link spam, without establishing a universal penalty-to-gain ratio. Appropriately qualified advertising is distinct, but outside this unpaid plan. What exactly can go wrong, and how to judge a link offer on quality, is covered in buying backlinks: the risks and the alternative NL. Also avoid irrelevant links, unless a genuinely useful cross-topic context supports the reference. And build calmly: a change from three references to thirty a month needs context, not an automatic spam verdict or invented safe pace.
When assessing your own profile, count referring domains, not individual links
Do not assume a fixed value or diminishing return for a second link from the same domain; twenty links from twenty different real sites is a different story from twenty links from one blog. And remember that nobody outside Google knows how heavily an individual link weighs: Google publishes no ranking factor weights, so anyone who promises you a score or percentage per link is guessing at best and making it up at worst.
Assessing exchanges: reader value, evidence and policy
Exchanging links has a bad name, and partly a deserved one: mass reciprocal link exchange is precisely what Google's spam policy classes as link spam. References between two relevant sites may be independently useful, but thirty years of web history, moderation or relevance is not a compliance test. Assess whether links are created primarily to manipulate rankings and whether each publisher can freely decline. A gardener who links to the nursery where he gets his plants, and vice versa may describe real supplier references if independently useful. A coordinated circle of two hundred sites created primarily for ranking credit is a different purpose; topology and count alone do not establish compliance. The principle behind a proper exchange, including where the line lies, is explained in peer-to-peer link building and in link exchange: how it works.
A triangle changes topology, not the link-spam rule
Instead of A to B and B back to A, A links to B, B to C and C to A. Every site gives and receives in a coordinated cycle. Avoiding a direct pair is not an exemption and must not be presented as evading detection. This is exactly how our own free link building platform LinkLoop organises exchanges, including continuous monitoring of every placement and credits back when a link goes offline.
About the cost of that we are exact: the Starter tier is free with 10 credits a month and no payment details
Anyone who wants to exchange more pays €29 a month for Growth, €79 for Pro or €149 for Agency, all three excluding VAT. There is no other amount and no small print with a forced upgrade. Whether Starter fits depends on current access, terms and the owner's actual needs; it does not certify a compliant exchange.
When do you see something back from this work
The honest answer: nobody knows that in advance, and a result date cannot be guaranteed from this plan. Task estimates and delivery dates are distinct from promises about Google. A new link first has to be found by Google, then weighed, and what that then does to your rankings depends on everything at once: your market, your content, your technology and what your competitors are doing in the meantime. Google publishes general timing guidance, not a case-specific deadline for a backlink to improve this site. So this guide does not either.
What you can do is follow your own measurement data
Search Console shows, per page, which search queries you appear for, where you get clicks and how your average position moves. Alongside your link log from FIG.04, keep a monthly note of those figures, and compare trends over a defined period. Search Console has report limits; an association with the work does not isolate causation from other site, market or algorithm changes. If nothing moves, look critically at your page and your internal structure first before chasing more links: the whole structure that links are the top layer of is covered in improving your SEO.
And do not fool yourself with other people's yardsticks
Domain authority and similar scores are estimates from third-party tool makers, not a measure from Google. They can be useful for comparing sites with each other, but a threshold as a requirement, such as a minimum score before a link would count, is invented certainty. Prioritise evidence of relevance and reader value for this assessment, without claiming known Google factor weights.
Doing it yourself, outsourcing, or something in between
This guide exists so you can do it yourself, and for many website owners that is also the best route: you know your trade, your customers and your story better than any provider. But doing it yourself costs time, and you are entitled to make that trade-off honestly. If an hour a week costs you more than it delivers, outsourcing is not a weakness but a calculation. How to make that trade-off, including what you do and never hand over and how to judge an agency, is covered in full in outsourcing link building or doing it yourself. You can run the numbers on your own assumptions with the link building cost calculator.
For completeness, our own offering, in the same terms as everywhere else on this site: link building is included within an ongoing SEO programme of €250 a month, where we aim for one to two good placements a month, as a best effort and not a guarantee. Standalone, it can be done at an hourly rate of €65. Exchanging yourself through LinkLoop is free with Starter. Our service rates are openly listed on the pricing page NL, and the subscription prices for Jarvis and the MyParcel Dashboard are on their own product pages, and how we approach the work is covered at the link building hub.
If you choose a different provider, at least ask the questions from choosing an SEO agency NL
The most important one: a ranking or traffic outcome is not guaranteed. Evaluate a promised placement count or delivery date separately from a claim about what those placements will do in Google. That is not an opinion but logic: nobody outside Google decides what a link does, and nobody has control over someone else's site.
Frequently asked questions
Can I really do link building myself without an agency?
Yes. Earning, asking and assessing reciprocal references are learnable methods, subject to resources, costs and editorial choice, not a universally fixed order or guaranteed free route. What an agency adds is time, routine and an existing network, not a trick you are missing. Start small: one page, a short source list and a fixed hour a week are a manageable starting scope, not evidence of superior results.
How much time does link building take per week?
You choose that yourself, and this guide therefore works in three flavours: around an hour a week for the base rhythm, around two hours if you want to write a guest article monthly, and around four hours if you also want to build your own link worthy material. The time estimates are starting points, not measured norms or promises. Count preparation and follow-up within the chosen weekly total; an article or tool may need to be divided over more weeks.
How many backlinks per month is realistic if I do it myself?
There is no honest fixed number for that, because it depends on your market, your material and your hours. A small personal approach does not guarantee a link or its permanence, and two versus twenty is not a measurable value ratio here. Use dated competitor observations as context, not a target count or proof that links caused their ranking.
Is exchanging links not against Google's rules?
Google identifies excessive exchanges and links created primarily to manipulate rankings as link spam. Low volume, relevant topics and triangular rather than direct exchanges do not provide an exemption. Assess independently useful reader references, leave each publisher free to decline or qualify a link, and reject reciprocal obligations primarily intended to obtain ranking credit.
When do I see something back from new links?
We give no timeframe for that, because it differs per site and per market, and general Google timing guidance is not a case-specific backlink-result deadline. New links first have to be found and weighed, and nobody sets that pace for you. So follow your own measurement data in Search Console: impressions, clicks and rankings per page tell you more than any promise.
What does it cost if I want to outsource link building after all?
With us, link building is included in the ongoing SEO programme of €250 a month, in which we aim for one to two good placements a month as a best effort and not a guarantee. Standalone, it can be done at an hourly rate of €65. Exchanging yourself through LinkLoop can be free with the Starter tier of 10 credits a month. Our service rates for SEO, Google Ads, social media and branding are on the pricing page, and the subscription prices for Jarvis and the MyParcel Dashboard are on their own product pages.
