Link building without budget, five routes at zero euros.
Link building without budget is not a watered-down version of the real work: it is the same discipline, paid for with time instead of money. This guide sets out five strategies to assess for zero additional cash spending, subject to available time, access, eligibility and fees: your existing network, industry directories and platforms, guest content, exchanging in moderation and your own link-worthy material. With a first-month plan you can start today and a free skill that adapts that plan to your situation.
- Unzip it into

Five strategies, zero euros
reg. N.001Use these five strategies only where no additional fee or subscription is required: you pay with time, attention and sometimes a bit of nerve. Their order is a starting heuristic, not a proven ranking for every business, from the low-threshold work you can do today to the project that only takes shape after weeks. What a backlink actually is, and how earned references differ from bought ranking links, you can read beforehand in what is link building NL.
A small rhythm, every week
reg. N.002An earlier version of this article promised results in under two hours a week. We no longer make that promise, because your diary and your market decide what is realistic, not our article. What we can show you is an example rhythm: this is what a week can look like if you set aside around an hour and a half for it. Adapt it to capacity. This example selects only network outreach and directories; it does not add exchange or guest posting as a third route.
Four weeks, one start
reg. N.003A calendar can organise the work but cannot produce or guarantee a link profile. This plan splits the first month into four weeks, each with one focus. It deliberately sets no number of links as a target: you steer by feasible actions and record actual completion separately from replies, placements and search outcomes. The skill at the top of this page fills in this template for your situation.
Where you should best start
reg. N.004Not every free route suits every business. The cards below show, per situation, possible routes to investigate first, plus the pitfall that comes with it. These are starting recommendations based on how these markets work, not measurements and not guarantees.
- Review platforms and comparison sites where buyers are already comparing
- Guest content and podcasts in your own niche
- Pitfall: skipping your network because it feels small
- The full approach is set out in link building for SaaS
- A complete Google Business Profile as a findable foundation
- Trade association, local directories and suppliers in the region
- Pitfall: collecting national directories that nobody from your town reads
- More local groundwork is set out in the local SEO checklist
- Online shop: the brands and suppliers you sell often have a dealer page
- Freelancer: expert comments and guest content, use substantiated expertise rather than assuming personal visibility earns a link
- Pitfall: exchanging with anything that says yes
- See link building for online shops
What zero additional euros does and does not mean
It sounds contradictory, but having no budget can encourage research and useful content, but does not establish compliance. Earned mentions, real relationships and content that people link to on their own: that is what keeps the web valuable, and some work can use existing resources without additional cash spending. Bought links are the opposite, and Google's spam policy explicitly names buying or selling links that pass ranking value as link spam. No cash budget does not prevent spam: excessive exchanges or ranking links obtained for goods or services can also violate the policy.
There is also an honest limit, and it belongs in this story
Zero euros does not mean zero cost: you pay with hours, and hours are scarce. In a market where competitors have been building their link profile for years, a few hours a week may or may not be sufficient; the gap and likely effort need evidence. That is not a reason not to start, but it is a reason to be realistic about what you aim for. Choose keywords and pages where the gap is small, and plan for uncertain effort and timing rather than assume a fixed pace. When the sums tip towards bringing in help, read outsourcing link building or doing it yourself.
And never start with links if the rest is not in place
Links are the top layer of a structure whose foundation is content, technique and internal structure. A free check of that foundation takes five minutes via the free SEO scan, and the whole structure is described in improving your SEO. Investigate the actual bottleneck; not every minute spent changes the value of every later link.
Route 1: investigate your existing network
People you already know may provide relevant opportunities, without guaranteeing the fastest route or any mention. Draw up a list of everyone with their own website that you have a real relationship with: suppliers, customers, partners, former colleagues, your accountant, the association you belong to, the platform where you once gave a guest lecture. List only genuine relationships and assess their relevance; no comparative response performance is established here.
Approach those contacts personally and with a specific request
Not "would you link to my site", but: "you have a page about your partners, is it right that we are not on there yet?" Or: "you wrote about this topic last year, I have made a guide on it that would help your readers further." Explain what you are working on, name the page where the mention would fit, and make it easy for the other person. Five personal messages versus fifty standard emails is a planning comparison, not an observed performance result; measure your own defined campaign if useful.
Two things to keep sharp
First: a relevant unlinked mention may support recognition, but neither visibility impact nor a later link is assured. So do not push if someone is happy to mention you but not to link. Second: make each reference an independent editorial choice for readers, not a required favour. Twenty back-and-forth arrangements is not a published policy threshold; purpose and the overall arrangement matter at any count. How to assess that is covered further on, at route 4.
Route 2: directories, registers and platforms
Research whether relevant discovery places exist for your actual audience. For software and SaaS, G2, Capterra, Trustpilot and Product Hunt are examples to investigate, not equivalent services or verified free listing opportunities for every product. For local businesses, they are an eligible Google Business Profile, trade associations and directories with evidence of regional usefulness. Your own profile is an owned listing, not an independently earned endorsement. For trade specialists, they are professional registers and membership lists. One tidy, complete listing per relevant place is the goal.
Be honest about what this route delivers
Check the actual link attributes: Google treats nofollow as a hint, not a quantified guarantee of little or zero ranking effect. The value lies elsewhere: a relevant listing may support discovery or referral visits in a suitable context; verify actual traffic rather than assume it. That may be useful for a young business, quite apart from any debate about link value.
The pitfall of this route is volume
There are hundreds of generic listing pages and business directories that you can add yourself to in ten minutes, but quantity and a short signup time do not establish audience value, traffic or quality. Ask yourself one question per directory: would my target audience ever search here? If the answer is no, the listing is not worth the form. Five versus fifty is not a measured ranking comparison; select on evidence of relevance and usefulness.
Route 3: guest content for someone else's audience
Guest content is anything you create for someone else's audience: an article on a trade blog, a conversation on a podcast, a contribution to a newsletter, a guest lecture or webinar. A receiving editor may independently choose a reference when the contribution helps readers, but no link is owed. Preparation and results vary; this guide does not establish the most valuable or most demanding route.
The rule that decides everything: write for their readers, not for your link
Pitch a specific angle that fits what the site already publishes, rather than a generic offer to "write something sometime". Accept that an editor is allowed to say no, and that a refusal may have many reasons; do not infer one without evidence. Platforms like Medium and LinkedIn you can use without a pitch; check current access and link attributes, and do not equate self-publication with guaranteed peer visibility. The full approach, from choosing a topic to a pitch that does not read as spam, is set out in guest posting for backlinks.
Without a budget, your time is the limiting factor, so keep it small and specific: one guest pitch a month is a planning example; whether one or ten is feasible depends on capacity and evidence
And reuse what you create. Three shorter contributions or a follow-on podcast article are possible adaptations, subject to permission and distinct reader value. Do not mass-distribute near-duplicate articles for ranking links or assume that any adaptation earns links.
Route 4: evaluate the purpose of any exchange
Link exchange requires careful assessment: mass reciprocal link exchange is exactly what Google's spam policy classes as link spam. Independent useful references between two sites can be legitimate, but relevance alone does not exempt an arranged exchange. A landscape gardener linking to the grower he buys his plants from, and the other way round: that may help a visitor when each reference is independently justified. Google names excessive exchanges and links created primarily to manipulate rankings; moderation or a particular structure is no safe harbour. The practical assessment is set out in peer-to-peer link building and in link exchange: how it works.
A triangle is a structure, not a compliance exemption: A links to B, B to C and C to A
Every site gives and receives, without a direct reciprocal pair, but the wider arrangement can still be link spam; this is not a method for avoiding detection. This is how our own free link building platform LinkLoop organises exchanging: matches on relevance, the triangle exchange as the default, ongoing monitoring of every placement, and your credits back when a link goes offline.
On cost we are exact, because this is the zero-euro guide: the Starter plan of LinkLoop is free, with 10 credits a month and no payment details
Anyone who wants to exchange more later can move up to Growth for €29, Pro for €79 or Agency for €149 a month, all three excluding VAT, but for this guide Starter is enough. That way you find out, without additional Starter cash spending, but with time and policy risks still to assess, whether exchanging suits your site and your rhythm.
Route 5: your own material that earns links
An independently chosen reference may arise when someone finds your page, thinks it is good and links to it. Useful material can take many forms; three examples are Complete guides that genuinely cover a topic, original data or research that exists nowhere else, and free tools that visitors get immediate use from. Use an example only if existing resources cover it without extra spending; research, development or access can require money as well as knowledge and time.
One approach to test is the better version: find an article in your niche that is already widely linked to, and create a version that is more complete, more current and better supported. Then approach the sites linking to the original and point them to your version, personally and without pressure. Record actual outcomes without inventing response rates. A reply does not ensure a link, and a published link need not remain forever.
Whether your existing pages are already link-worthy, you can assess with a free heuristic, not proof that links will be earned with the content link-worthiness score
And with incoming links, pay attention to your anchor text: let editors choose accurate, descriptive references. No brand/keyword mix establishes compliance, and artificial anchor variation does not cure ranking-driven link spam. Further context is set out in anchor text variation NL.
What you specifically do not do without a budget: buy
It is precisely when the budget is zero that the cheap offer becomes tempting: dozens of links for the price of one dinner out. Price alone does not prove spam or establish the most expensive choice; investigate the arrangement and actual evidence. Unknown ownership or other placements require verification, and buying links for ranking credit falls under Google's spam policy; properly qualified advertising is distinct. The full risk assessment, plus an alternative workflow with its own checks, is set out in buying backlinks: the risks and the alternative NL.
If you want to know what the paid routes really cost, from single placements to agencies, that comparison with actual figures is set out in what does link building cost NL
The short version for this guide: every route that costs money costs more than zero, and these routes may offer a zero-additional-cash start when resources, access and eligibility permit.
For completeness, our own offering, in the same terms as everywhere else on this site: link building is included within an ongoing SEO programme of €250 a month, in which we aim for one to two good placements a month, as an effort and not a guarantee. Standalone, it is available per hour for €65, and exchanging yourself via LinkLoop is free with Starter. Our service rates for SEO, Google Ads, social media and branding are on the pricing page NL, and the subscription prices for Jarvis and the MyParcel Dashboard are on their own product pages, and how we approach the work is set out at the link building specialist.
Frequently asked questions
Can link building really work without a budget?
Yes. Assess all five for fees, eligibility and existing resources before calling them zero-additional-cost; exchanging can have a free entry option too: LinkLoop has a Starter plan with 10 credits a month and no payment details. What you cannot do is skip the work. Free means the investment sits in hours, and that you plan and keep up those hours yourself.
How many backlinks does the first month produce?
We deliberately do not give a number for that, because it depends entirely on your market, your network and your material. So steer by work done, such as contacts approached and pitches sent, while recording feasible plans, actual completion and external outcomes separately.
How much time does link building without a budget take per week?
That is up to you. The example rhythm in this guide adds up to around an hour and a half a week, but that is one example choice, not a standard: half an hour or four hours are capacity examples, not assured completion budgets. A sustainable plan helps organisation but does not necessarily outperform a one-off useful action.
Are free links from directories and platforms worth anything?
Sometimes, often not, and the difference lies in the audience. A listing in a directory where your target audience genuinely searches has value, even if the link is technically nofollow: it may bring visitors and puts your brand in a logical place. A hundred low-value directory listings do not establish reader benefit and can raise quality concerns; no numerical outcome is established here. So choose a handful of directories that matter in your industry and leave the rest alone.
Is exchanging links free and safe?
An exchange may avoid additional cash spending, but fees and resources still need checking. Google names excessive exchanges and links created primarily to manipulate rankings as link spam. Relevance, low volume and triangular structure are not safety exemptions. Three sites linking in a loop remove a direct reciprocal pair, not the need for independent editorial reader value or assessment of the overall arrangement.
When does outsourcing make more sense than doing it yourself?
As soon as the hours cost you more than they deliver, or your market asks for more than your diary allows. With us, link building is included in the ongoing SEO programme of €250 a month, in which we aim for one to two good placements a month as an effort and not a guarantee. On its own it is available for €65 an hour, and exchanging yourself via LinkLoop stays free with Starter. Our service rates for SEO, Google Ads, social media and branding are on the pricing page, and the subscription prices for Jarvis and the MyParcel Dashboard are on their own product pages.
Start this week with your selected routes
Link building without budget starts with choosing at most two feasible routes. If network outreach is selected, ten genuine contacts and the first five suitable messages are optional planning targets, not facts to invent or a third route to add. Let the free scan check your basics first, download the skill at the top of this page for a plan tailored to your situation, and keep a log from the first message onwards. You can always learn more in the knowledge base, and more free tools are on our skills page. If you would still like someone alongside you, we can discuss in a call what doing it yourself and outsourcing cost and deliver in your situation: that is possible via the contact page.
