Protect your SEO traffic from AI Overviews
AI answers more and more searches before anyone clicks through. There is no input field on this page: what there is, is the questionnaire we use to judge per page how exposed it is, across four categories. You put your own page next to it and see for yourself where the risk sits.
Since AI Overviews, every search goes one of two ways
It is not a matter of more or less traffic, it is a set of points that switches per question. And the lever is not at Google but at you: it depends on whether your page holds something a summary cannot take with it.
Two of the four categories decide almost everything between them
The questionnaire has four categories, but the most important outcome is a combination of two: does the page have elements of its own, and is the text genuinely written by you. Set those two against each other and you know which square you are in.
The full questionnaire, four categories
Page intent
What is the main goal, which stage of the funnel is it in, how many clear calls to action are on it.
Unique elements
Your own visuals, a tool or calculator, cases with results, reviews, your own figures, a question and answer block with at least five questions.
Content quality
Length, structure, how much of it is genuinely written from scratch, when the page was last updated.
Behaviour and trust
Loading time, readability, a clear author, contact details that can be found.
What the AI Traffic Loss Shield does for you
More and more searches are answered inside Google, without anyone clicking through. The AI Traffic Loss Shield is how we judge here how exposed a page is to that. At the moment it is a method, not software: there is no scan on this page for you to fill in and there is no plugin to download yet.
What there is, is the full questionnaire, written out below, split across four categories: page intent, unique elements, content quality and behaviour, user experience and trust. Work through them for your most important page and within ten minutes you know where your risk sits. That is exactly the same list we work through inside an SEO programme.
What you fill in and what you get back
Category 1 is about intent: what is the main goal of the page, giving information, comparing, selling or passing people on, which stage of the funnel it is in and how many clear calls to action are on it.
Category 2 is about unique elements that can only be found with you, such as your own visuals, a tool or calculator, cases with results, reviews, your own figures or a question and answer block with at least five questions. Category 3 is about the text itself: length, structure, how much of it is genuinely written from scratch and when the page was last updated. Category 4 looks at loading time, readability and trust signals such as a clear author or contact details that can be found.
You read the outcome yourself. If category 2 turns up almost nothing that can only be found with you, and category 3 says the page is mostly running text, then this is a page whose answer an AI overview will take over wholesale. That is the most important combination to watch. What you do about it is further down: add a decision guide, a price overview, cases with figures or a question and answer block, so something a summary cannot get around.
Why AI is taking more and more of your clicks
AI Overviews increasingly answer the whole search. Visitors already see a complete answer in Google and click through less readily. In Search Console you see this as a falling click through rate while your position in the results stays the same.
Pages that consist mostly of text are especially exposed to this. Systems like GPT, Gemini and Perplexity summarise generic text easily and then have little reason to name your site as the source. Without your own visuals, schema and clear answer blocks you also appear less often for people who use an AI system to search.
How TheSEO tackles AI traffic loss
The questionnaire above gives a first indication. For real protection we put a whole programme behind it, in a fixed order. First we analyse which pages draw, or used to draw, a lot of traffic and tie that to the search intent. Then we set an AI risk score per page, looking among other things at how much of it is text, what assets are your own, how current it is and whether the subject is sensitive to fast change, such as money, health or law.
On that basis you get concrete proposals for anti AI blocks: small tools, checklists, decision guides or a price overview. Together we choose which improvements go live first, after which we keep following traffic and behaviour to see which changes protect your SEO traffic best.
Defending your clicks is one half of the answer. The other half is being named inside the AI answer that took them, and that is a separate measurement with its own question list, described under the service AI visibility. If your traffic in Search Console has been sinking for months and you are not sure whether AI is even the cause, start with the diagnosis in why are you getting fewer impressions in Google Search Console, because a measurement change looks exactly the same in a graph.
Who this tool is useful for
The AI Traffic Loss Shield matters most for pages that used to draw a lot of traffic on informational keywords, think of how, what and why questions. Those are exactly the pages where AI Overviews often give a full answer. Pillar pages and important service pages qualify too.
Do you work with WordPress and want a better grip on how visitors behave once they do click through? Then combine this questionnaire with our heatmap and scrollmap plugin, so you can see where people drop off on a page. If you would rather build trust with local clients, look at our WhatsApp review tool (in Dutch) for reviews that count as unique content. You will find both in our full overview of tools and plugins.
An example from practice
A client had held the top spot on an important keyword for a long time with an informational page. After AI Overviews arrived the position stayed stable, but the number of clicks fell noticeably. The page consisted mostly of text, with few elements of its own.
Analysis showed that AI Overviews were already answering most of the main question. We added a decision guide and a simple tool, plus cases and figures of our own, and made clear who the service is and is not suitable for. After those changes the traffic stabilised and the quality of the enquiries went up, because the page helps visitors better with their next step.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a tool or a service?
A service. There is no scan on this page for you to fill in and there is no plugin to download yet; what there is, is the questionnaire we use ourselves, so you can work through it by hand. TheSEO is building a WordPress plugin, so that before long you will see an AI risk score and concrete advice per page inside your own CMS.
Can AI traffic loss be prevented entirely?
No, not entirely, because the way AI systems answer is outside your control. You can set pages up so that they add more value than the short answer in an AI overview, with interactive blocks, cases, data and visuals.
What does working through the list actually give me?
You get clarity about which pages are most exposed and which changes deserve priority. For a full implementation TheSEO works this shield out inside an SEO programme, including content structure and technical changes. Book a call if you want to know what that means for your pages.
